Off grid camping with the Suncoast Caravans Coolum Caravan at the Big Red Bash 2024 in Birdsville, Queensland

Here we are at the Big Red Bash 2024 with the Coolum Suncoast Caravan in a full off grid camp situation.  We thought we’d drop some info for everyone in here now and then come back with the full details when we get back.

POWER:

We’ve had 2 days with no need to run the generator and then others we’ve been running it a little to keep topped up because we know we’ve got some cloudy days coming.

RECEPTION:

We’ve got no problems with reception within range of the Starlink.  It’s currently sitting on the roof of the ute. Woke up this morning to see 26 people using it.  Sharing is caring but we thought we better pop a password on it. Sorry fellas.

WHAT’S GREAT:

It’s fabulous out here the most beautiful sunrise and sunsets … a party atmosphere, pitch dark at night, we are in the middle of nowhere. When it rains there’s a bit of mud but we deal with it like everyone else.

We love seeing all the families and kids, we don’t worry about putting anything away,  great environment, a real electric buzz about the place.

FOOD:

Foodwise we’ve been cooking on BBQ or using the awesome food vans.  Also some microwave meals sometimes.

Brekky we’re doing Karen’s banana blueberry blitzes in the machine or having smoked salmon and eggs on the BBQ.

Bad news Karen’s coffee frother doesn’t work.   Borrowed one from a friend though so she’s happy.

We have just been hanging out, drinking beers, port at night telling lies around the campfire.

TOILETS:

Look we know this is something you need to know  so we’re going there. The toilets are always an adventure – drop toilets here are tricky with sawdust and wind not great for the ladies. Had to say it.

MUSIC:

Furnace and the Fundamentals are rocking the place, everyone absolutely loves them (us included).  They just ‘go off’ they cut all the well known songs short and weave them together and have been great.  Also enjoyed Pierce Brothers who we haven’t seen before now. It’s daylight still at 6.10pm here with great sunsets with the bands playing, just magic.

LOCATION:

To do all of this on the edge of what is basically the Simpson Desert making this the most remote music festival in the world we are near nothing and in awe of how they get everything out here.  Huge shout out to the volunteers, there must be over a 100 or something but the volunteers make it work.

TRAVELLING HERE:

Left Rocky Tuesday last week got here Thursday. Maybe 1200k’s?

We weren’t ‘spose to come in until Saturday but we had the early pass.  Because of the rain forecast for Sunday they were letting people in on Friday anyway so people could come early.

There were flooded roads after the rain and some stranded at Windorah and people stranded in Birdsville …  parts of campsite still boggy but we are all good here.  I made the news traipsing through the mud!

You’ve really got to come out and experience it.

Stay tuned for more on this trip when we get back.  We are currently living in the moment.
